Havanese History
The Havanese is
a descendent of the Bichon family. The earliest references to its ancestors go
back to 23 BC from the Mediterranean region. Havanese may have originated on
the island of Malta. Also known as the Havana Silk Dog, today's Havanese
descended from the dogs that settled in Cuba. They were popular among the
wealthy Cubans. After Cuba's revolution in 1959, a few Havanese found their
way into the United States.
The little
refugee from Cuba has now found its way into the hearts and homes of many
fanciers in Canada, the United States and around the world.
Havanese are a sturdy little dogs who relish being part of a family. Always ready to play in the yard or quietly snuggle on a lap or by your feet, the Havanese is equally at home in an apartment, the country or the suburbs. Havanese are a Toy breed ranging from 8.5-11.5 in
(22-29 cm) in height. The standard does not address weight, but a Havanese
ranges from 7-15 lbs. The breed comes in a virtual rainbow of hues - white,
cream, champagne, gold, blue, black, silver, chocolate, or any combination of
these colours. The non-shedding coat is long, soft and wispy with curls or
tufts at the ends.
The combination of its
outgoing personality with its trainability, Havanese are excellent
candidates for obedience and agility training.
Beauty and style are the result of responsible breeders who have not comprised their friendliness, intelligence and sturdiness resulting in the Havanese of today.
